Elizabeth married William (Ballantyne) Valentine in Barrhill, Scotland, July 21, 1882. William was born in Girvan, Ayr County, Scotland December 31, 1861. William died about November 18, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska, at approximately 65 years of age.

Note: William's name was spelled Ballantine on his birth record. He came from Girvan, a modest-size coastal city 12 miles west of Barrhill, Scotland. His marriage license spelled it Vallantine. He immigrated to America with his wife's family in 1885 settling in Nebraska.

Fanny and her 4 children, Robert (almost 19), James (almost 17), Jessie (age 12) and Alexander (age 10), along with Fanny's eldest daughter Elizabeth (age 25), her husband, William Valentine (though it was spelled Ballantyne on the passenger list, about age 25) and their two sons, Hugh (3) and William (1), departed for America. They arrived on the steamship Circassia at the port of New York on Nov. 24, 1885 and later joined John and William in Nebraska. Elizabeth was the one who cared for her mother, Fanny, during her final days in Omaha

17 i. Hugh⁴ Valentine was born in Barrhill, Scotland November 1883. Hugh died about January 1, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska, at approximately 59 years of age.

23 vii. James M. Valentine, was born in Omaha, Nebraska February 1895. James became a physician and set up practice in Chicago.

24 viii. Ethel Valentine, was born in Omaha, Nebraska January 1896. She married Sonnie. Ethel was called Effie.

25 ix. Gene Valentine, was born in Omaha, Nebraska 1901.

9. John (Milbay)³ Melvin (John (Milby)², William (Milby)¹) was born in Maybole, Scotland September 9, 1862. John died February 9, 1906 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 43 years of age.

John married Mary Unknown in Dodge County, Nebraska, about 1885. Mary died January 24, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Note: On John's birth record, his mother, Fanny, is identified by her maiden surname of Stevenson with a notation that she was, "widow of William Milby, who died on 17th December 1859."

John immigrated to Nebraska around 1885. He was the first of the family to leave Scotland. He departed Glasgow, alone, at age 20 on the steamship Anchoria, arriving at the port of New York on May 13, 1882. His brother, William, did the same two years later. They settled in Dodge County, Nebraska where in mid Oct 1885, each of them executed a Declaration of Intention for U.S. citzenship.

His occupation was a fireman and he was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. John died of an aortic aneurysm and cirrhosis of the liver. He had been confined for several weeks in the hospital with heart trouble.

John (Milbay) Melvin and Mary Unknown had the following children:

31 vi. John L. Melvin, was born in North Bend, Nebraska about 1898. John died August 3, 1924 in Leavenworth, Kansas, at 26 years of age.

Note: John L. Melvin was received at United States Penitentiary-Leavenworth on December 20, 1921, to serve a sentence of a year and a day. He was convicted in the United States District Court in Omaha, Nebraska for violating the Harrison Narcotic Act. Melvin was a longtime morphine addict. He was released on October 2, 1922.

He was received again at Leavenworth on July 30, 1924. Same court, same charge, same sentence. He died four days later at the age of 26 from pneumonia and post narcotic toxemia in the U.S. Penitentiary Hospital.

There is a fifty page file on him that one can obtain through the National Archives and Records Administration, Central Plains Region, Kansas City, Missouri. Files 17801 and 21621.

The Kansas certificate of death indicated John L. Melvin was single, age 26 and his occupation was mechanic-taxi.

33 viii. Henry Melvin, was born in Nebraska June 1, 1904. Henry died April 1, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 26 years of age. Henry died at the age of 26 from pneumonia.

11. Robert Stevenson³ Melvin (John (Milby)², William (Milby)¹) was born in Barrhill, Ayrshire, Scotland November 27, 1866. Robert died April 5, 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 90 years of age. His body was interred about April 8, 1957 in Fort Calhoun Cemetery, Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska.

Robert married Caroline Jipp in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, July 12, 1894. Caroline was born in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska May 19, 1873. Caroline died December 14, 1911 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 38 years of age. Her body was interred December 17, 1911 in Fort Calhoun Cemetery, Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska.

Caroline Jipp Melvin, also called Carrie, died at the age of 38 from burns after lighting her kitchen gasoline stove one morning.

After a Day of Suffering, Woman, Burned in Kerosene Explosion, Dies Yester day Afternoon.

Leaves Four Children

Mrs. Caroline Melvin, 610 South Thirty-eighth avenue, who was burned from head to foot early Thursday morning when a can of kerosene exploded, died shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Methodist hospital.

Her condition was most critical when taken to the hospital and it was not thought at the time that she could recover. Early in the afternoon she became rapidly worse and death was a matter of a few hours.

Mrs. Melvin was pouring kerosene into the kitchen stove to make a quick fire when the can exploded and enveloped her in buring oil. Her screams brought Mr. Melvin and her daughter, Katherine, to her assistance, but before the flames were put out she had been terribly burned. Both Mr. Melvin and the girl were burned about the hands and face in trying to save her.

Mrs. Melvin was 38 years old, and is survived by her husband, a machinist, and four children: Roy, 16; Katherine, 14; Caroline, 12, and Robert 10.

The funeral of Mrs. Melvin will be held Friday afternoon at the residence with the Rev. Mr. Jenks, First Presbyterian church, officiating. The body will be shipped tomorrow afternoon to Calhoun, Nebraska, the former home, for burial.

Note: Robert was a machinist and chauffeur. He petitioned the court to become a citizen on August 1, 1918. Declaration Of Intent. Robert immigrated, to Nebraska on November 24, 1885.

Robert immigrated to the U.S. directly to Nebraska on 24 Nov 1885. He arrived in the port of New York on the ship Circassia along with his mother, Fanny and siblings James, Jessie and Alexander. Also aboard were her daughter, Elizabeth, from her first marriage to William Milby, along with her husband William Valentine and their two sons, Hugh and William. Fanny's older sons John and William Melvin immigrated to the U.S. before them and settled in Dodge County, Nebraska.

Robert became a natrualized citizen on 12 Nov 1919 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was 5 ft. 6 inches tall, 156 pounds, had brown hair and blue eyes. He was a machinist and chauffeur. He was a member of the Clan Gordon in the Order of Scottish Clans since 1894. He died in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 90 from arteriosclerosis, senility, chronic pyelonephritis or inflammation of the kidneys. He was interred at Ft. Calhoun Cemetary in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska.

Robert Stevenson Melvin and Caroline Jipp had the following children:

James married Mollie Unknown in Nebraska, about 1894. Mollie was born in Nebraska about 1873.

Note: Six months after James' birth, Fanny's mother, Jane, died of typhus fever. James immigrated with his family to America on November 24, 1885. He married Mollie in Nebraska and had three children by 1900.

14. Jessie³ Melvin (John (Milby)², William (Milby)¹) was born in Barrhill, Ayrshire, Scotland March 15, 1873. Jessie died in Montana.

Jessie married James Scilley in Dodge County, Nebraska, about 1890. James was born in Ireland about July 1863. James died in Montana.

Note: Jessie was the first child recorded with the surname of Melvin. Jessie immigrated to Nebraska with her family on November 24, 1885. After she married James Scilley, they moved to Livingston, Montana between 1930 and 1935 where James opened a real estate business. There may have been more children born to this marriage.

15. Alexander³ Melvin (John (Milby)², William (Milby)¹) was born in Barrhill, Ayrshire, Scotland August 9, 1875. Alexander died October 4, 1961 in Kearney, Nebraska, at 86 years of age.

Alexander married Lydia Ellnora Hughes in Fremont, Nebraska, August 23, 1899. Lydia was born in Stanton, Nebraska April 10, 1880. Lydia died October 17, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 61 years of age.

Note: Lydia, whom went by Nora, supervised the Miller Park playoffs of the Omaha City Tennis tournament.

Alexander immigrated with his family to Nebraska on November 24, 1885. He was buried in Omaha, Nebraska. His occupation was caretaker and gardner for the Omaha Miller and Fontenelle Parks for 30 years.

Alexander and Lydia also held a reception at the Fontenelle park pavilion to announce their daughter Lela's engagement to Werner Levermann.

Alexander died at the age of 86 from bronchial pneumonia.

Alexander Melvin and Lydia Ellnora Hughes had the following children:

46 i. Vesta Jane⁴ Melvin, was born in Fremont, Nebraska March 28, 1900. Vesta died March 14, 1983 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 82 years of age. She married twice. She married Louis Leo Bussanmus in Omaha, Nebraska, September 1, 1919. Louis was born in Grandville, Iowa June 13, 1891. Louis died August 6, 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 58 years of age. Louis was a taxi driver and in sales. He was in the USNR-F during WW I. He was buried in the national cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Louis and Vesta had no children.

She married Robert Smith Babb in Omaha, Nebraska, February 23, 1941. Robert was born in Terrell, Texas December 6, 1901. Robert died August 10, 1970 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 68 years of age. Robert was a salesman. Vesta Jane had no children during her two marriages.

47 ii. Charles Alexander Melvin, was born in Omaha, Nebraska January 9, 1904. Charles died January 30, 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 67 years of age. ,Charles never married or had any children and died at the age of 67 from cirrhosis. He worked as a clerk in the office of the Union Pacific Railroad.

48 iii. Daisy Berniece Melvin (Twin), was born in Omaha, Nebraska March 7, 1911. Daisy died March 16, 1978 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 67 years of age. She married twice. She married Norman Vern Barnum in Kansas City, Kansas, November 11, 1949. Norman was born in Kansas City, Missouri January 20, 1908. Norman died November 17, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 52 years of age. Norman Barnum was an engineer for OPPD. He died from a 12 foot fall, resulting in a broken back, while cleaning paint from the windows of a new home he and his wife, Daisy, had just moved into. He was a Navy CB during WW II. Norman and Daisy had no children.

She married Thomas Howard McClain in Omaha, Nebraska, December 1, 1963. Thomas was born in Eddyville, Iowa September 20, 1896. Thomas died February 11, 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska, at 74 years of age. Thomas' occupation centered around wholesale women and children's clothing. He was in the Army during WWI. They had no children.
